Imagine a story…

where there are no friends. Take Ron and Hermione out of Harry Potter and imagine Frodo without Sam. Its surprising sometimes just how much we take the simple pleasures of a novel for granted. I know I always did… but something happened tonight, its like I finally figured out the secret sauce of creating a compelling character.

I was watching Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban this evening which (for future reference my readers would like to know) is my favorite Harry Potter book and movie. JK Rowling has cleverly crafted a complex plot, much more rich in its imagination than the first two books and without any filler content. The book introduced the marauder’s map, the time-turner, the animagus, the patronus charm… there is so much to love. It also includes some of the best moments in the series where Harry is distraught and his friends are around to help him het through it. And so, I started to appreciate just how much these three friends mean to each other.

It reminded me of the scene in the deathly hallows part 1, where Harry dances with Hermione while she is sad over Ron having left the group. And the movie ends with Dobby dying and saying he’s happy because he was with friends- oh JK Rowling! You are a witch! She has done this over and over again throughout the series.

But what if she hadn’t?

So, imagine a story without friendship… I wonder if it will be just that- depressing.
